01 — The Argument

The field has already moved. Education has not. This is how to close the gap.

Thirty years of watching the same gap widen. Research, synthesis, and the ability to build are the skills the field needs most right now. They are also the skills most programs stopped teaching.

The Problem

The current model no longer holds.

Axonometric illustration of an impossible institutional system — multiple paths visible, red and yellow planes mark dead ends and ambiguity
  1. 01

Designers are asked to invent without evidence.

When a designer is told to “just design something,” the request itself is the failure. Decisions made without research are decisions that cannot be defended — and a design that cannot be defended is not a design.

  2. 02

The field has shifted. Education has not.

Practice has moved on from deliverables to systems, from artifacts to outcomes, from preference to verification. Curricula still optimize for portfolio polish — a metric the industry no longer rewards.

  3. 03

    AI accelerates form, not judgment.

Generative tools collapse the time it takes to produce a screen, a layout, a brand. They do not collapse the time it takes to know whether the screen, layout, or brand is right. That work — research, synthesis, verification — is the work education has stopped teaching.

The Method

Decisions are earned, not invented.

A design that cannot be defended is not a design. A design that does not ship is not a design. The method is the standard the work is held to — five steps, in order, every time.

Step 01

Research

Walk in the audience’s shoes. Sit with messy evidence.

Step 02

Synthesis

Let the shape emerge on paper. No premature form.

Step 03

Design

The design comes from the synthesis — never preference.

Step 04

Test

Verify against reality, not against intent.

Step 05

Ship

Prove it in the world. Until shipped, it is hypothesis.

Research → Synthesis → Design → Test → Ship

The Evidence

Four forms of proof.

Not a portfolio. Not a gallery. Each path is a different kind of evidence the method holds — in the classroom, in research, in thesis, in shipped work.

About

I came through a different door.

Not art school. Journalism in the Navy. An HTML class in college. A trade magazine, a grassroots firm in Washington, DC, a healthcare company. Thirty years of holding onto craft and the ability to build through every shift the field has been through.

“The door I came through turns out to be the one design needs now.”
